Abstract

Abstract

This article is devoted to the publication of a document from the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire, held by the Historical and Documentary Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The historical source itself, which describes the 1731 initiative to establish a school in Kazan for teaching the children of Tatar military and tax-paying officials foreign languages—Arabic, Persian, and Turkish—is presented in the form of a report from the Collegium of Foreign Affairs and a memorandum from the initiator of the educational institution. A brief analytical overview of the document’s content is provided before the source text itself. The relevance of this work stems from the fact that the full text of this source is being published for the first time in Russian historiography. The document provides a deeper understanding of the Russian state’s need for translators of Eastern languages during the period in question, and also, to some extent, broadens our understanding of the history of Kazan in the 18th century.

The aim of this study is to publish the historical source presented below. The objectives were to transcribe and transliterate the text of the document for publication, and to analyze the source itself and the background of the initiative to establish an educational institution. The study revealed an initiative to establish an educational institution for the study of Eastern languages in Kazan in 1731.
